Breakfast at Zero George isn’t complete without a tender, buttery biscuit made by Callie’s Hot Little Biscuits. Carrie Morey founded the company in 2005 and has been going nonstop every since. It’s no wonder that she was chosen as one of Martha Stewarts’s “Dreamers into Doers” and her biscuits have been featured on Food Network and The Today Show. We recently caught up with this native Charlestonian for a quick Q&A:
What’s your favorite way to eat a Callie’s Biscuit?
I love to split open the Buttermilk Biscuit, or really any flavor, and put a pad of butter on each side, toast it to get it extra crunchy, and add tons of melted butter!
What’s your favorite dessert in Charleston?
All the desserts at FIG are my favorite and they change often!
What’s your favorite way to “play tourist” in Charleston?
I love to plan a progressive dinner downtown starting with drinks, then apps, then dinner and dessert—each with a different stop. And if I get my way, I always love to start the evening off with a carriage ride. They never get old and I am a native, but it’s such a beautiful way to see the city. I always learn something new about my hometown!
Your cookbook is gorgeous! Where do you find your inspiration for your modern approach to traditional Southern cooking?
Why thank you so much! I live a busy life where I am constantly feeding my family with my heritage in my head! However, we have so many more options for healthy fresh foods, with farmer’s markets, and CSA’s so it’s easy to update the classics with a modern touch!
