Travel + Leisure magazine just released their 2013 —  “It List” Best New Hotels — and Zero George has it!    

Featured as the only property in Charleston, and one of only 61 properties from around the globe, Zero George was chosen by the editors at Travel + Leisure as one of the world’s best new hotels in 2013, that are transforming their destinations.  Zero was featured on CBS Morning Show interview of the T + L Deputy Editor Laura Begley Bloom.

As one of only six hotels in the United States, Travel + Leisure selected Zero George because of its unique blend of historic Charleston architectural elements and casually elegant residential decor.   The editors cited our upscale amenities including our Chef’s private cooking classes and Zero Cafe + Bar with southern-inspired small plate dishes available to hotel guests and patrons. 

It is an honor to be included on such a prestigious list by one of the world’s top travel magazine, and we strive to continue to demonstrate to our guests why Zero George and Charleston are such unique experiences in innovative travel.

Coastal Living Magazine always has great ideas of what to do this summer in their annual “99 Days of Summer” feature in the May issue. The feature covers the 99 days between Memorial Day and Labor Day with creative ways to celebrate our favorite season. We are thrilled to be listed as what to do on Day 25! But you don’t have to wait until day 25, check in to Zero George for some R&R anytime this summer!

Zero George

The Chef’s concept for this class was to use fresh local ingredients during their growing season, to teach guests the way around a kitchen and to think like a chef by learning technique and ratios.  They also learned how to transform plating from rigid symmetry to fun and functional. 

He started with a Chilled Asparagus Salad with Fennel, Orange Supreme, and a Citrus Tarragon Vinaigrette.  The main dish was Seared Sheepshead with Cauliflower Risotto, Spring Onion and Kale Crisps.  For dessert, they learned to prepare Sweet Corn Bread with Strawberries, Lavender Honey and a Chambord Cream. 

Try making Chef’s famous Sweet Corn Bread:

Dry Ingredients:

1.5 cups corn meal

1 cup all-purpose flour

½ cup brown sugar

1tsp baking powder

Wet Ingredients:

3 eggs

¼ lb butter

1 ¾ cups buttermilk

1. Mix the dry ingredients together in one bowl, the wet ingredients in another.

2. Mix the two together and pour into a greased cast iron skillet.

3. Bake at 350 for 25-35 minutes.

I’ve created a few three night packages for this year’s Spoleto Festival USA that I hope you will enjoy.

The first one is a Musical Variety Package that offers three weekday performances in which I chose 3 distinctly different music styles.  A little something for everyone, from multi-media by Pamela Z to jazz with classical piano by liro Rantala that won him the German equivalent of a Grammy, to the celebration of The Rite of Spring and all of the music that it has influenced over the past 100 years.

The second package is a Traditional Variety Package that offers a double bill of one act, rarely performed operas, followed by an updated take on Oedipus the next night, and it wouldn’t be Spoleto without a Chamber Music concert. In both of these packages, you will also enjoy a relaxing sunset sail around the Charleston Harbor with hors d’ oeuvres and wine provided by us at Zero George.

The third package is for the closing weekend of the festival and was my favorite to put together.  The Closing Weekend Package offers an amazing dance performance by Shantala Shivalingappa who The New York Times calls “divinely gifted”, followed by a concert by J.D. McPherson at the Cistern on the next night that is classic rock ‘n’ roll with a fresh take.  Then close out the festival at Middleton Place with The Red Stick Ramblers’ blend of Cajun, honky-tonk and swing followed by the traditional celebratory post-concert fireworks.
