The 2014 Spoleto Festival Has Begun!

Each year both locals and tourists alike converge on Charleston to celebrate the arts. For 17 days, beginning May 23rd, The Holy City’s historic churches, opera houses, and cobbled streets will feature performances and expos from both established and emerging artists, performers, and musicians. With so much to do, it’s hard to know where to start. Here at Zero George, we’ve picked some festival favorites we can’t help looking forward to.

9pm Friday May 23 – Start your festival off at the President’s House on the campus of The College of Charleston. Enjoy beautiful bites and cocktails from the lavish outdoor bar while listening to one of many live performances. Tickets can be purchased by phone at 843.724.1192

3pm Sunday May 25 — Though you may usually refrain from trips to the Ballet, the Hubbard Street Dance Chicago is not to be missed. Under the artistic direction of Glenn Edgerton, these sleek and sparsely-decorated dancers defy gravity with elegance, leaving their audience hypnotized and amazed at what Ballet can be. Tickets can be purchased online here.

Julia Lynn Photography

Tuesday May 27 – Enjoy a special look at the historic Dock Street Theater under the playful musical banter of some of the world’s best musicians,  including oboist James Austin Smith, the St. Lawrence String Quartet, and pianist Stephen Prutsman, whose highly anticipated piano quintet will debut at the 2014 Festival. Choose from an 11am or 1pm performance. Tickets can be purchased here.

Molde Jazz 2012

5pm Friday June 6 — With unique whimsicality and imagination, Norwegian artist HÅKON KORNSTAD provides a new take on where opera can go. Originally a Jazz musician, Kornstad takes his skill at free jazz and combines it with a passion for tenor-fueld operas. The result is a new sound that combines old world music with new age improvisation. Snag up these tickets before they are gone!
